The twin valleys of Rhonda reverberate with the history of coal mining. We will be looking at the human history in the layout of the streets, chapels, workmen's halls, cemeteries and the general landscape. This day trip is your opportunity to learn more about the terms and conditions of life in the coalmining communities in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This day will be spent exploring the rich and fascinating heritage of this amazing landscape where the history of industrialisation has been so clearly etched. We will be visiting former iron furnaces, old bridges, abandoned tram roads, graveyards, houses and gardens. Time will be spent walking and investigating the places where the events that marked some of the greatest political and social changes in history took place. A Most Romantic Valley The Vale of Neath |

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the Vale of Neath was one of the favourite areas for the ‘romantic’ tourists. We will visit waterfalls, canals, see how waterpower has been harnessed and discover traces of great engineering. The valley is full of small delights and places of interest. Here can be discovered associations with Russia and Germany, a municipal park that went off the rails and the influence of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Laugharne is probably best known for Dylan Thomas but there is much more besides with its lovely Georgian houses and the castle that was the scene of one of the battles of the Civil War. The area is both lovely and notorious and we will be exploring aspects of its sometimes unsavoury history. This is a walking tour (between 3 and 4 miles) along footpaths and pavements. In 1801 the population of Cardiff was the same as the date. Within one hundred years it had grown to become one of the principal conurbations of Britain. This day will be spent tracing the history of Cardiff through some of its parks, buildings, streets, river and docks and finding out about its rich, diverse population.
